The Sharks’ Grant Underwood has got off to a flying start in the 2015 canoe slalom season, taking a third and fourth in the season’s first slalom national at Matlock, Derbyshire, racing in men’s kayak singles.
Last year Grant narrowly missed out on promotion to national slalom division one after an injury had kept him inactive for most of the season and tragically denied him a place in the British Wild Water Racing Team. His 2014 season was curtailed to just a few events at the end of the year, but he is now on course for early promotion to division 1. He will be racing closer to home in a fortnight’s at Shepperton on the River Thames.
There were encouraging signs from twelve-year-old Amelia Combes, who started off slowly on Saturday, but grew with experience and is a name to look out for in the future.
Team Manager, Neal Underwood, explained “slalom is a very technical sport, not only do you have to learn the skills, but you need to learn the water and each venue is different. Amelia is young and is learning very quickly, last year she was a novice and has started this year in division two and that is no mean feat, to come to new water like Matlock and to compete at this level is a great achievement and bodes well for the future.”
Also racing for The Sharks was veteran, Neal Underwood, who managed a disappointing 59th on Saturday, but recovered slightly on Sunday to 48th.
