Sharks take their first bite of Canoe Polo
Harefield Sharks have a new discipline under their belts after kicking off their first Canoe Polo season, writes Sean Davies.
The side played in the opening round of the London and South Eastern Canoe Polo League, recording two draws and a loss.
Club development officer Neal Underwood was pleased with the side’s first outing in the sport. He said: “For a first time out. I think we did very well. We need to get some more players into the team and I think we will start getting some good results. The event was great fun, everybody was enjoying the day. This is a new activity for as and a bit of an experiment. By next year we hope to have a strong senior team that can push for promotion and a ladies team as well as a youth team.”
A small team made up of Adam Stewart, Grant Underwood, Rod Grundy, Neal Underwood and a borrowed player from Hertfordshire University took to the water at Rickmansworth Aquadrome.
The first match was against St Albans and the side came back from one goal down to draw thanks to an Underwood equaliser. They followed this with a draw against host club Nomads after coming from behind twice with goals from Underwood and Stewart.
Goals from Stewart and Grundy were not enough in their final game of the day against Castle Abba with the Sharks going down 4-2.
The Sharks intend to use Hillingdon Leisure Centre pool at Uxbridge as their home venue and training sessions will start in November. For more information visit www.thesharks.org.uk, email: canoeing@thesharks.org.uk or call Neal Underwood on 07951 770241 to find out more.
