Symonds Yat Slalom – James Reed is on the up

The Sharks finished the 2015 slalom season at Symonds, Yat with some good solid results, which bide well for next year.

YatJames2915The team that travelled was smaller than expected with university commitments pulling paddlers away from the team, but James Reed was on form to take the masters prize on both days in the Men’s division 3 Kayak event. Coming 7th on Saturday and 8t on Sunday. giving him a final position in the National Division 3 rankings of 6th and only just missed promotion to Division 2. James will start 2016 with hopes of a very early promotion.

YatAmelia215Thirteen-year-old Amelia Combes from Drayton Manor High School, returned to her place of triumph where a year before she had been promoted to National Division 2 Ladies’ K1.  On Saturday she came in at 18th which she pulled up to 12th on Sunday, which given that she is racing against people much older is a significant achievement. Giving her a final position of 44th in Division 2.

With some gate work over the Winter, The Sharks are confident that it will not be long before Amelia becomes our first Division one Lady.

Slalom is going to be a prominent feature for The Sharks in 2016; the club are expected to announce details of appointing a top level coach to support our slalom team. We expect to have the gates back at Harefield within the next few weeks and are looking to be holding regular slalom sessions at Hillingdon Leisure Centre through the Winter months.

If you want to be part of that team then email: canoeing@thesharks.org.uk, you do not need any experience, we will teach and coach as well as supply all the kit.
